On November 27th 1978, Harvey Milk was assassinated by Dan White. Milk, who was the first openly gay man elected to California public office, served as an inspiration to countless GLBT individuals. His legacy of hope continues to live on and he is a true American hero. I had the chance to listen to one of his more famous speeches today and it struck a strong emotional chord with me. As a mother of a gay teen, I know all too well all the prejudice and obstacles that are still out there. Even though Cody works and pays taxes, like any other American, he can’t marry or serve his country. In our home state of Michigan, it’s still legal for his employer to fire him just because of his sexuality. While things have progressed some since in the past years, we still have a long way to go.
